I grew up with a mother who baked pies. Cream pies were my personal favorite, plain and coconut cream. My mother made them from scratch and from my early youth I would stand at the stove on a chair stirring the cream custard in a double boiler, waiting anxiously for it to thicken. It seemed interminable then, in what I recall to have been a metal pot with an insert. In our marriage we have carried on the tradition and have had many different double boilers over the years, including aluminum and glass ones which we had up until the purchase of an induction range which precluded the use of glass. We have had All-Clad Ltd cookware almost since it was introduced, but it too had to be replaced, being mostly aluminum and not compatible with induction technology.
